These are modern versions of hunger revolts.
Dramatic increase in commodity(food, fuel) prices over the last few years disproportionally affected poor (commodity consumption makes up a large percentage of their budget).

This also created a strain on government budgets of countries that are net importers of commodities (Europe, USA). Situation will get better as commodity bubble gets defused, but that might take another year or two. At that point social unrest and government budgetary vows will shift to exporters of commodities (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, etc).
Israel - a big time commodity exporter is hit very hard (and doing very well comparatively) and will benefit dramatically when commodity bubble defused.
